& there, seated on one of the two GreenBenches by the Gravel walk, they foundthe united Denham Party; – but thoughunited in the Groſs, very distinctly dividedagain – the two superior Ladies being atone end of the bench, & Sir Edw:Edward & Miſs B.Breretonat the other. — Charlotte's first glance toldher that Sir Edw:'sEdward's air was that of a Lover. –There could be no doubt of his Devotion toClara. — How Clara received it, was leſsobvious – but she was inclined to thinknot very favourably; for tho'though sitting thus apart with him (which probably she might not have been able to prevent) herAir was calm & grave. — That the youngLady at the other end of the Bench wasdoing Penance, was indubitable. Thedifference in Miſs Denham's countenance, the change from Miſs Denham sittingin cold Grandeur in Mrs . Parker's Drawg -Drawing-room to be kept from silence by theefforts of others, to Miſs D.Denham at Lady D.'sDenham'sElbow, listening & talking with smilingattention or solicitous eagerneſs, was verystriking — and very amusing – or very me::lancholy, just as S[..]atire1 or Moralitymight prevail. — Miſs Denham's Character was pretty well decided with Charlotte.
